CCAMLR-2000 Synoptic Survey Post-cruise analysis

Report of CCAMLR-2000 Special Issue Workshop

British Antarctic Survey, Cambridge

30 May - 6 June 2001

Introduction

  1. The aims of the meeting were to:
  2. It is the intention that the Special Issue should be published by Deep-Sea Research. This journal has been contacted and has agreed in principle that the suggested topic and set of papers would be suitable for publication in DSR. Deep-Sea Research is now awaiting a more detailed description of the papers and a proposed time-table.
  3. A list of participants at the Workshop is given in Appendix A.

Assess current status of papers proposed for Special Issue

  1. Oral presentations were given on the majority of papers proposed for the Special Issue. In addition draft manuscripts were available for some of the presentations and copies of these were distributed to participants at the workshop.
  2. A list of presentations is shown in Appendix B. Note that the current status of papers is now available here.

Identify actions and time-table to achieve our publication objectives

  1. The Steering Committee (Watkins, Hewitt, Naganobu, Sushin) determined that the following time table would be appropriate:
  2. It was agreed that authors should be asked to suggest suitable referees for their papers
  3. It was agreed that plots or figures would be drawn to a common projection and cover the same area. Details of this are provided here.
  4. The Chairman of the Steering Committee will produce a letter to be sent out confirming timetable and actions for each lead author.
  5. The Steering Committee will liaise with the editor of DSR to confirm committment to publish the Special Issue and obtain details of requirements for publication.

Fate of the ‘Letter to Nature’

  1. A letter to Nature describing the estimate of krill biomass in the Scotia Sea had been turned down by the editors of Nature. The Workshop discussed what should be done in light of this. It was felt that the best way forward would be to recast the paper to describe more of the way in which such information was used by CCAMLR in the innovative management of the ecosystem. The revised paper would then be submitted to Science and possibly resubmitted to Nature.

Collaboration between CCAMLR and IWC

  1. The CCAMLR-2000 survey had resulted in a productive collaboration between scientists from IWC and CCAMLR. Ways in which such collaborations could be continued, such as through a IWC-sponsored workshop, were discussed.
  2. It was agreed that Convenor of WG-EMM would discuss these matters with Dr Reilly and bring forward proposals for collaboration to WG-EMM.

Status of the web site

  1. The Workshop discussed briefly the status of the Synoptic Survey web site. It was agreed that the web site had two potential roles to fulfill. The first was to facilitate communication between scientists involved in the production of the Special Issue. The second was to provide general information about the survey and analysis of survey data that would be suitable for general access.
  2. It was agreed that BAS would investigate setting up a password protected area that could be used by survey participants.
