The effects of lightning, power lines and VLF transmitters on the geospace environment
The effects of lightning, power lines and VLF transmitters
on the geospace environment

It is becoming more and more important for humans to question their impact on the environment as it is increasingly apparent that they are able to modify significantly its natural state and behaviour, intentionally or unintentionally. The study of VLF signals that originate near to the ground and their effects on the ionosphere and plasmasphere is part of the puzzle that needs to be solved. Lightning, power lines and VLF transmitters all have the capability to inject strong signals into the upper atmosphere. The aim of this project is to work towards an understanding of the individual and collective effects of these phenomena. The project will investigate the relative importance of the effects of lightning, PLHR and VLF transmitter signals on the energetic particle population of the plasmasphere.
