The Plasmasphere
The Plasmasphere

The plasmasphere is a doughnut shaped region around the earth in the inner magnetosphere. The solar wind has very little effect on the plasmasphere, unlike the outer magnetosphere. Most of the ionised particles in the plasmasphere have escaped from the Earth's ionosphere and they rotate with the earth as they move back and forth between the northern and southern hemispheres along magnetic field lines.
