IGS British Branch Meeting - 2001

First (and last) Circular

This year's IGS-BBM will be held at the British Antarctic Survey headquarters in Cambridge.  We've settled on a date of 13-14 September, 2001.  I apologise to anyone inconvenienced by this, but it was difficult to identify and avoid all clashes.  I look forward to seeing a crowd.

Venue – the meeting will be held at BASHQ.  Ample parking is available, but be prepared to notify us of the registration number of your car at reception. There are plenty of directions to find us at

http://www.antarctica.ac.uk/Corporate/Cambridge/bas_contact.html

Facilities - the meeting will be in our Conference Room, which has an overhead projector, 35 mm slide, and data projector.

Posters - we will display posters within the meeting room so there should be ample opportunity for browsing.  The proprietors of posters will be invited to make a two-minute pitch to the entire meeting.  No need to bring overheads for this, as you can stand next to your poster to do it.   Max size 1200 mm (h) x 900 mm (w).

Accommodation - Cambridge has something of a reputation for providing over-priced accommodation, so we have tried hard to find a reasonable option. Fitzwilliam College proved to be the best, and is a couple of miles from BAS - a healthy walk.  Transport will be arranged for anyone who doesn't want to walk.   Cost is £32 per night payable with registration fee. Frankly, I was appalled that this is so much more expensive than last year, but the Cambridge Colleges do seem to charge what the market will stand!

If this is too steep, you could try the very excellent Cambridge YMCA (single room, £22.65 per night; shared room, £37 per room inc. VAT and breakfast, 01223 356998; http://www.theymca.org.uk/ ). This is in town and you’ll need to work out the buses, however BASHQ is directly opposite a Park and Ride site with regular buses to and from the town centre. If you want to use the YMCA please make your own booking and try early because Cambridge is a popular tourist centre.

Final option is the YHA, which is also central and is a step up from the usual bunkroom. (01223 354601; http://www.yha.org.uk/hostels_online). Again make your own booking.

For others in need we will try to find friendly floors for you to sleep on.

Coffee/Tea - Will be provided with cost included in the registration fee.

Lunches - Due to the distance to nearest alternatives we will provide a buffet lunch at a cost of £7 payable in advance.  Space will also be provided for anyone choosing to bring their own packed lunch.

Ents - There's not a whole lot to see at BAS, but for those that are interested, we will organize a quick tour of the site, including the weird stuff they keep in the aquarium, cold rooms etc. Elsewhere in Cambridge is the Scott Polar Research Institute (http://www.spri.cam.ac.uk/) which has an interesting small museum, that is open 1400-1600 Mondays to Fridays.

Icebreaker - There will be nothing organised on the evening of Wednesday, 12 September.  However, a good pub (which does reasonable food and has more seating upstairs) is The Castle, and a good curry house is The Maharajah (opposite The Castle).  Directions - leaving Fitzwilliam College, turn right and walk down the Huntingdon Road, towards town.  Walk for 5-10 minutes and watch for The Castle on your left and the Maharajah on the right.  If you don't like either continue down the hill into town.

The big night out – The annual dinner will be held at The Eraina, a Greek/middle Eastern/ Italian kind of a restaurant, which will be well known to anyone who has tried to find, that elusive grail, good food at an affordable price in the centre of Cambridge. This will be on Thursday 13 September at 7.30pm. Given sufficient attendees we will have a private room. Cost £13 payable in advance.

I hope to see you at the meeting.  Regards, David.
