 The system does not predict the time of arrival of the last waves in a series
The computer programs used to predict wave arrival times only predict the time of arrival of the first wave in what is often an extended wave train with several waves. The later waves often have complex travel paths affected by refraction and interference phenomena. Current policy is therefore not to cancel alerts and warnings for up to a day after they are issued, in view of the number of occasions on which people returning to inspect damage from earlier waves have been killed by later waves.
