TSUNAMI RISK IN THE NORTHEAST ATLANTICOffshore Hazards
Introduction
A discussion is given here on the nature of ocean water movements during the initial stages of tsunami generation and the hazard that this poses to offshore structures. Whereas tsunami flooding at the coast is a well-known effect that follows underwater slides, extreme vertical water motion in the open ocean over the area of slope failure is less well-known. This section of the report is following by a discussion of the various source regions in which Atlantic tsunamis can be generated and an account is also provided of what is known about such events having happened in the past.
