BAS UASD Theme, Energy Flow and Dissipation in Geospace Energy Flow and Dissipation in Geospace

The era of geospace exploration and discovery is largely complete. Now we are trying to develop an overall quantitative description of how the various parts of geospace link together - how the energy flows through geospace and where it is dissipated.

This overall theme is addressed by three distinct but complementary research programmes which are designed to study both the component and collective responses of geospace to the input of energy from the Sun:

The Solar wind - Magnetosphere - Ionosphere Transfer of Energy (SMITE) programme is targeted at understanding how solar wind energy is transferred to the magnetosphere and how and where it then reaches the polar ionosphere.
The Thermosphere - Ionosphere - Mesosphere Aeronomy (TIMA) programme studies the dissipation of energy in the polar thermosphere, its transport to lower latitudes and coupling to lower altitudes.
The Wave Generation and Propagation (WAVE) programme investigates the meso-scale and micro-scale processes involved in the energetics of the system.
