Reconnection signatures in the geomagnetic tail

BAS collaborated with Leicester University colleagues in the study of an interval of multiple substorm onsets. The motion of the Convection Reversal Boundary was followed through the interval and taken as an indicator of the dimensions of the polar cap. A variable delay in the destruction of open flux, following substorm onset, was found. For one susbstorm onset it was possible to deduce that the reconnection site in the magnetotail was positioned at 42Re.
