Polar patches are regions of high electron concentration at F-region altitudes
in the polar cap ionosphere. BAS has proposed a new mechanism for their formation,
involving the ionospheric effects of large velocity transients associated with
flux transfer events (FTEs), and changes of the By component of
the IMF. The diurnal and seasonal variation of polar patches has been described using data from the Halley HF radar. The relationship of riometer, optical and HF radar patches has been determined, but further studies are in hand.
