Transfer of Energy (SMITE) Programme

The focus of the Solar Wind-Magnetosphere-Ionosphere Transfer of Energy (SMITE) programme is to understand the physical processes by which energy is transported from the solar wind into the magnetosphere and ionosphere. This closely-coupled system is known as Geospace.

In practice, the objective is to determine how, where and how much solar wind energy reaches the polar ionosphere. For this we analyse data from the comprehensive suite of BAS experiments in Antarctica, from complementary ground-based experiments and from spacecraft such as Cluster and Global Geospace Science Mission. The experimental programme is complemented by in-house theory and numerical modelling studies.
