Summary: The successful launch of IMAGE, which uses new experimental techniques to remote sense the global distribution of near earth plasma, should represent a major breakthrough in our understanding of the magnetosphere. By combining with ground based measurements we are able to fully visualise the dynamics of the interaction of the magnetosphere with its solar wind environment.
