The MIST Cup

Granta MIST 2005: Report and Results

The 2005 MIST cup at the Granta MIST meeting in Cambridge was once again a hotly contested affair with the destination of the MIST cup trophy not being decided until the last second of the tournament. A low turnout meant that only three teams participated this year. These teams comprised of players from the London university colleges of Imperial and UCL ('Cockney Rebels'), from the research institutes of BAS and RAL ('Institutionalised'), and from four other universities from around the country ('Billy No Mates').

The first game was a 3-1 win for 'Billy No Mates' over 'Cockney Rebels'. George Millward's goal for 'Cockney Rebels' was scant consolation as 'Billy No Mates' ran riot, with Amin Aminaei revelling in his attacking role. The second game was similarly a 3-1 win for 'Institutionalised' over 'Cockney Rebels', with Mervyn Freeman and Alan Rodger providing the goals for 'Institutionalised'.

These results meant that the final game between 'Billy No Mates' and 'Institutionalised' would be the deciding game of the tournament. The game was a tight 0-0 draw, with 'Institutionalised' having the better chances. A penalty shoot-out ensued and after five penalties apiece the score was 4-4. Sudden death penalties followed. Gareth Chisham saved from Ian Bates leaving Mervyn Freeman to slot home the final penalty to give 'Institutionalised' the MIST cup trophy.
