The Magnetosheath
The Magnetosheath

The Earth and other planets are obstacles in the solar wind. The Earth's magnetic field provides an outer shield, the magnetosphere, that stops the solar wind from reaching the planet. The supersonic solar wind is slowed and deflected around the magnetosphere by a shock wave standing upstream of the Earth called the bow shock. The intervening layer is called the magnetosheath.
