SHARE, History and context

The radar started operation at Halley in January 1988 under the acronym PACE. It has operated continuously since that time. The new acronym SHARE stands for Southern Hemisphere Auroral Radar Experiment, a tripartite experiment involving scientists from BAS, the Johns Hopkins University (USA) and South Aftrica (PUCHE, Potchefstroom and University of Natal). The radar is also part of the SuperDARN international radar network and is a contributor to the NASA GGS project.
