Pulsations.
Pulsations.

The transient ground magnetic signatures associated with a chain of travelling convection vortices comprise just one of a wide variety of oscillatory signatures detectable by ground magnetometers. They are classified by their continuous (Pc) or irregular (Pi) waveform and by their frequency band (Pc1 to Pc6 or Pi1 to Pi3). They may be further sub-classified by their physical origin. The numerical and physical classifications are summarised in the figure (Saito, 1978). Often the pulsations are hidden within larger amplitude fluctuations. Standard signal analysis techniques such as band-pass filtering may be used to study the waves in greater detail as required.
