The Lorentz force.
The Lorentz force.

A charged particle moving in a magnetic field, experiences a force proportional to its charge, velocity and the magnetic field. The force is at right angles to the particle velocity and the magnetic field and hence causes it to gyrate around the direction of the magnetic field - ions one way, electrons the other. In the presence of another force the particles also drift perpendicular to both the applied force and the magnetic field.
