Magnetic field direction The magnetic field varies in direction over the Earth's surface. At the equator it points horizontally northwards. At the poles it points vertically - downwards at the North pole and upwards at the South pole. Elsewhere, it points somewhere in between with both a northward component and either an upwards or downwards component too. It may also have a smaller eastward or westward component. |
