Conductivity map.
Conductivity map.

The map shows how the Hall and Pedersen conductivities vary as a function of latitude and longitude (Wallis and Budzinski, 1981). In the sunlit ionosphere the conductivity is due predominantly to solar radiation and is fairly uniform, varying gradually with solar zenith angle. In the dark ionosphere the conductivity is sustained by particle precipitation from geospace This is concentrated in two belts approximately centred on the magnetic poles that are known as the auroral zones.
