A transmitted radio wave is reflected in the ionosphere when the transmitted
frequency is equal to the local plasma frequency which depends on the electron
concentration. The electron concentration, Ne (in m-3), required to reflect a radio
wave of a given frequency, f (in MHz), is determined by the relation:-
Hence the frequency of a radio wave reflected from the ionosphere tells us the electron concentration at the reflection point.
