Global change in the last 250,000 years

(a meeting of the UK PAGES community)

One-day meeting to be held on Friday March 10th 2000, at Senate House, University of London, from 10:30-18:00.

Sponsored by the UK International Geosphere Biosphere Programme (IGBP) National Committee.

Organised by Eric Wolff (British Antarctic Survey, ewwo@bas.ac.uk), Robert Mulvaney (BAS), Catherine Stickley (ECRC, University College, London).

NEW: Programme now available here.

Senate House is conveniently located within walking distance of King's Cross, St. Pancras and Euston stations, and near several tube stations. For more details of the venue and other matters about the meeting, click here.

Session chairs: Brian Huntley (Durham), Nick McCave (Cambridge), Paul Valdes (Reading). Frank Oldfield of the PAGES International Project Office in Bern will present a talk about the past and future of PAGES and Chris Rapley, chair of the UK IGBP National Committee, will start the meeting.

[Note: if you cannot attend the meeting, but would still like to see your group's work represented in the abstracts booklet, please go to the form for this (one per group).]

The UK palaeoclimate community, interested in the PAGES (Past Global Changes) project, comes from a wide range of disciplines including terrestrial, freshwater, marine, glaciological, archaeological, and numerical modelling. This meeting is planned as a step towards greater collaboration between these groups, and between the PAGES community and the rest of IGBP science. The meeting will provide a forum for UK researchers to meet together, to learn about the latest advances, and will provide scientists (particularly younger scientists) the chance to present their research to the wider palaeoclimate community. It will also provide an opportunity to develop the UK contribution to the science and future development of PAGES.

PAGES has considered its science in two time streams:

This meeting will welcome contributions on all aspects of palaeoscience within this time period, as well as work that uses palaeo studies to interpret present-day processes, or vice-versa.

The meeting will have a strong emphasis on poster sessions, with a few short talks that will cover general areas of palaeoscience as well as new findings, and a discussion session. You are invited to submit abstracts, initially for consideration as posters, referring to the instructions below, by January 10th, 2000. A number of presenters will be invited to present their work, linked to an overview of their area of science, orally.

In order to fund a convenient central London venue with space for posters and talks, and to ensure maximum poster-viewing time by including lunch at the venue, we have to charge a small registration fee. This will be £20 (£10 for registered students/unwaged), to include sandwich lunch, coffees and teas. Please complete the registration form below as soon as possible, but in any case before February 10th 2000.

We recognise that London cannot be reached by 10:30 am from all parts of the UK. The UK IGBP National Committee has applied for funds to subsidise travel and/or subsistence costs of postdoctoral scientists with longer journeys. These subsidies will be paid against receipts for travel or accommodation, and must be applied for in advance. Preference will be given to those (1) who would be unable to reach London on the day of the meeting without travelling the day before, (2) those with train journeys that are particularly expensive. Please complete the relevant part of the form below if you would like to apply for this subsidy.

An abstracts booklet will be supplied at the meeting. This will be a useful snapshot of UK palaeoclimate research, but will not be complete. You are therefore invited to submit a brief resume of the work of your research group that will be appended to the back of the booklet to help with future collaboration. Please complete the form for this (one per group) even if you will not be represented at the meeting.
