Philip - These are notes for the use of the images.

The figure showing the retreat of wordie is a 1.4 Mb colour tif file. It is described in the Nature paper Vaughan and Doake, 1996. Broadly it is derived from surface survey, aerial photgraphs, Landsat MSS and TM data, ERS-1 SAR imagery. The ice shelf is 70 km north to south.

The figure is very similar to that

The first image of Larsen etc was aquired on 14/1/95 at the ARIES satellite receiving station at BAS's Rothera Station. e2c72b6f.tif (640 Kb). Here it is reprojected to

  • 771 rows x 792 cols
  • Polar Stereographic
  • Spheroid = WGS 84
  • Latitude of true scale = 71 S
  • Y-axis longitude = 50 W
  • Pixels 1000 x 1000 m
  • Upper left (-811170. , 3203370)
  • The second image of Larsen etc was aquired on 25/2/95 at the ARIES satellite receiving station at BAS's Rothera Station. e2c75cba.tif (480 Kb). Here it is reprojected to

  • 724 rows x 662 cols
  • Polar Stereographic
  • Spheroid = WGS 84
  • Latitude of true scale = 71 S
  • Y-axis longitude = 50 W
  • Pixels 1000 x 1000 m
  • Upper left (-730430. , 3059309.)
  • The reprojection of these images was done using only indetifiable features within the image itself. This is far from abundant considering the large area covered and so I think there are significant distortions still present. If you overlay the images you'll see the disagreement. I hope this is all intelligable. I can certainly read the images using XV.
