Local Area Network (LAN):
-
10Mb throughout the ship over Cat5e Twisted Pair with RJ45 LAN access ports. Although cables from wall port to PC are available, you must provide the rest of the hardware and software to connect your own PC/laptop to the ship’s LAN. This means that you provide network card or PC Card adaptor plus the relevant drivers. Help can be provided by BAS Cambridge ICT department prior to departure (contact the Helpdesk on +44 (0)1223 221447 or send an email to helpdesk@bas.ac.uk).
Wide Area Network (WAN):
-
BAS provides a 24 hour satellite link of 128Kb (IE about twice the speed of a telephone modem). This has to handle the traffic for everyone on base, including Voip telephone calls, work data, remote access, web browsing and email. Many people bring web "toys" south only to find they do not work as well as they might hope.
Printers/Plotters

-
1 x HP1055cm A0 colour inkjet plotter
-
1 x HP4550 Colour Laser printer with duplex unit
-
1 x HP2300 Black and White Laser printer with duplex unit
-
There is enough plain paper and ink cartridges for average use of the printers/plotters. If you consider that you may need more than average or a particular paper/transparency stock, then this must be arranged before the ship sails each year; preferably in July during stock checks.
-
There are no spare media for general use. This includes zip disks, floppy disks, DLT, DAT, DVD or CD-R media.
You must supply your own media.
Novell NetWare Account
-
You will be allocated with an account and 1Gb of backed up network disk storage for your personal/work use. This space can be increased at the discretion of the Radio Officer. The account and all files will be deleted upon leaving the ship. A unix account can be arranged upon request.

If you are not employed by BAS you will have to provide your own web based email facilities (and inform BAS personnel of the address).
