People who go to the continent are often amazed by what they see and do: the experience is in itself a primary motivation. There is the sense that we are helping to make a difference to key environmental issues. Many cite the opportunity to work with a diverse range of people. There’s also the privilege (if that’s not overstating the case) of being part of a unique organisation with a unique set of challenges.
These are some of the benefits on offer, depending on whether you’re stationed at Cambridge or Antarctica, and the actual job you will be doing.
We offer flexible working hours for Cambridge based staff. This allows for more flexibility in day-to-day working arrangements than working fixed hours.
Other flexible working practices include:
As an Investors in People accredited employer, BAS takes the training and development needs of its staff seriously. We offer the opportunity for people undertake the appropriate training and development related to their jobs, and to expand their horizons further.
Training for Antarctic staff is based around the annual briefing conference, which is held at the beginning of September in Cambridge. Staff are invited to this week long conference to learn about life in Antarctica and to undertake first aid training. Other training requirements specific to your role will be discussed in more detail with you at that time. The training does not stop once you arrive at the Antarctic station — you will be taught a range of skills, including how to light a primer stove and how to pitch a tent in the snow!
