NERC Research Grants and Fellowships Handbook - June 2014

The latest edition (June 2014) of the (External) NERC Research Grants and Fellowships Handbook (External) (Grants awarded on Full Economic Cost basis) is now available.

UK Glaciology and Antarctic symposia: September 2014

The Bristol Glaciology Centre, University of Bristol, will be hosting the following two UK meetings in September:

1. The International Glaciological Society British Branch Meeting, 8-9 September 2014 .

 2. The UK Antarctic Research Symposium, 11-12 September 2014 .

Registration:   Please go to (External) http://www.igsoc.org/about/britishbranch/meetings/bristol2014/ to register and submit your abstract for one or both of the meetings. We invite oral and poster presentations in all areas of glaciology/Antarctic science.   Deadline:  Registration and abstract submission deadline for both meetings has been extended to 1200 (midday) on Thursday 7th August 2014.
Wednesday 10th September (break day):   If you are planning on coming to both meetings, there are a number of events being organised for the Wednesday break day. These will include workshops and cultural trips. More details will be announced at a later date.   Polar photo competition :   During the meeting week we are also holding a polar photo competition. The deadline is the same for the registration and abstract submission (1st August). Up to 3 photos may be submitted at the following link: (External) http://tinyurl.com/polarpic

 New dates for NERC Standard Grant Applications

NERC has changed the dates for the ‘December’ standard grant round.  The dates have been moved forward to January and the January 2014 closing date will be 21 January at 16:00 GMT.  The 2014 call will open and proposals can be submitted on Je-S from 1 September 2013.    There are two calls in this round: Standard Grant JAN14 and Standard Grant - NI JAN14 (for a New Investigator).  This is an open competition for curiosity-motivated basic, strategic or applied research. Please also note that the July  2014 standard grant deadline has also been moved to the 22nd of July.

Preliminary requests for Antarctic logistic support must be received no later than 3 months prior to submission deadline of the intended funding opportunity.

 NERC Fellowship Scheme

In 2012, NERC Council decided to introduce a new NERC Independent Research Fellowship scheme (IRF) that will replace the previous schemes (Postdoctoral Fellowships and Advanced Fellowships).  These five-year awards will ' support outstanding environmental scientists and enable them to develop their research, start to build a research group and become internationally recognised '.  Further information about the Independent Research Fellowship, including deadlines and application processes can be found at (External) http://www.nerc.ac.uk/funding/available/fellowships/
